Making money online as a singer doesn’t happen overnight. The sooner you start, the faster you’ll be able to use your vocal gift to reach your income goals. In this post, I’ll dive a little deeper with the ways that you can start earning money online so you have all the essential information that you’ll need to make singing your full-time income.

Let’s begin!

1. Use online streaming services to share your music

Selling your music is a big part of making money online for any singer. The best way to get your music out there and see some earnings is by placing your songs on music streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, and other digital music stores.

With these platforms, you can distribute your songs online and earn royalties from your music.

Placing your music on the platform isn’t as simple as just going to the app and uploading your song online. You’ll need to work with a music distributor or a record label to add music to all the different music streaming services.

I recommend using Distrokid because they charge a low yearly fee of $19.99 while offering unlimited music uploads for one artist. Unlimited uploads are crucial because if you have many songs that you would like to upload online, the fees and rack up pretty quickly.

After uploading your songs on Distrokid, you’ll be able to access your music on all the different streaming platforms within a few weeks.

Once your music is online, you can start generating revenue for your music.

How to Get Started: Before you record an album, you first have to learn how to write a song.

Check out this step by step guide that I wrote on how to write a song so that you can start uploading tracks on all the important music streaming services.

Earning Potential: Moderately. Revenue from your songs can blow up if you write a hit track, but expect very low earnings when you start.

Time Until Your First Check: Medium. It may take music streaming platforms around 90 -120 days to report earnings to distributors. But once you have some fans and your songs on popular playlists, the income is very passive and can grow quickly.

Startup Cost: Low. To distribute your songs to streaming platforms only costs $19.99 per year on Distrokid.

2. Start a Youtube Channel

Over the years, Youtube has positioned itself as a powerhouse, ranking #2 only behind Google. With all the traffic coming to Youtube, there will be viewers ready to consume lots of content.

Starting a Youtube channel can be challenging at first. But with the right guidance and strategy, it can pay off in the long run and help you make money online.

You can use this platform to create a group of audiences that, over time, falls in love with your music and supports your music journey. You can monetize your channel by promoting your music, sharing your Patreon page, selling your vocal services, and promoting sponsored brands.

You can also make money through advertisements that play before or after your videos.

The monetizing opportunities are endless!

How to build a Youtube channel for singers

To earn subscribers and build a proper channel, you have to create excellent and consistent content. Posting irregularly will not help the Youtube algorithm and your subscriber’s thirst for more videos!

An efficient way of scheduling your content is by spending a day creating a bunch of videos and then slowly releasing them by following a weekly schedule. Let’s say you want to publish two videos a week. Create 8-10 videos first and then publish two videos each week while continuing to create more content.

Batching your videos creation days at once will help reduce the number of times you need to set up your camera gear and lessens the stress of burning yourself out because you’re chasing the publishing schedule.

How to Get Started: Create a list of video content ideas (song covers, music videos, music-related tips) and set specific days to publish.

Earning Potential: High. If you have subscribers, the sky’s the limit for Youtube monetization.

Time Until Your First Check: Medium. It depends on what you’re offering your fans. If you have a dedicated fan base already, you can make money quite quickly. For those starting from scratch, getting your first check might take 3-6 months. What I recommend is to focus on content first. Content is king! Make good content, attract fans to your channel, and then figure out monetizing.

Startup Cost: Moderate. It doesn’t cost much if you’re recording yourself. You can film with your smartphone and buy inexpensive but good sounding microphones like this lav mic on Amazon.

3. Start a Patreon page

What if there’s a way to create a steady online income that you can use to support your music career? How would that change the way you approach your music? That’s what the folks at Patreon thought about when they created this online membership platform.

With Patreon, you can create membership-based income through the donations from your dedicated fans.

You can create different levels of donations that allow fans to have exclusive access to bonus content such as behind-the-scenes videos, free downloads, fan recognition, early access to new music, personalized gifts, and live zoom calls.

How to have success on Patreon for singers

The key to having a successful Patreon page is providing value and engaging with your audience. Focus on benefits that will best engage your fans and their interests. Some of the best benefits don’t take a lot of extra time, but they can keep a lot of loyal members happy.

Simply spending some time creating a new short video or giving a shout out to a fan can provide high returns to your members. If your fans feel like your content and engagement is high, they’ll continue to keep their membership.

Before you start your Patreon page, you’ll need to prepare which platforms to share your Patreon with. For instance, Patreon works great alongside Youtube to promote your membership to loyal subscribers.

How to Get Started: Organize a Patreon launch for your existing fans. Think about the rewards for different tiers of donations. Start promoting your membership on your socials.

Earning Potential: Moderately High. Providing value to your loyal fans will be the main goal for Patreon. The more engaged they are, the more they’ll keep their membership with you.

Time Until Your First Check: Quick. If you have a group of fans already on your fans list, you can monetize within the first month!

Startup Cost: Low. You’re just marketing yourself and your platforms.

4. Start a blog about music

Creating a blog about music or singing is a great way to make money online. It allows you to show your expertise in your field as well as showcase and build your personal brand.

Starting a music blog can also provide different monetization opportunities, many of which can be entirely passive.

Here are some ways to make money with your blog:

  1. Affiliate products – Promote products and services for a commission fee.
  2. Advertisements – Sell ad space for companies to place on your website
  3. Digital products – Sell your courses and ebooks.
  4. Sponsorships – Get paid from brands to give them a shoutout in an article.

All four monetizing methods can work together simultaneously, which can be quite lucrative for any singer looking to create income for themselves.

Depending on your music experiences, you can create informational content around your music knowledge and genre type.

Let’s say you sing rock, you can write about the different singing techniques needed for rock vocals, or the best ways to prepare your voice before you get on stage. Your personal views, experience, and creatively will help your blog stand out from the crowd!

To start a blog, you’ll need three things:

  • A domain name
  • A web hosting account
  • Install WordPress on your hosting

I’ve tried many different hosting companies, and I recommend Bluehost to start your WordPress site. This hosting company is extremely inexpensive, provides a free domain (saves you $15), easy to use, and it’s very reliable.

ways-for-singers-to-make-money-online-with-blogging

The hosting only costs around $3 to $6 bucks per month, depending on their promotions. You have to pay upfront once a year, but that covers unlimited traffic to your website for the entire year.

Bluehost also has a “1-click WordPress install,” which can allow you to start your site very quickly.

With your domain, hosting account, and WordPress setup, all you have to do is start writing about what you’re good at singing!

Think about all the useful tips and tricks that you use that can help your readers. The main goal of blogging is to provide as much value to your audience as possible. If they’re learning something useful, they’ll be a repeat audience.

How to Get Started: Setup with Bluehost and start writing helpful content.

Earning Potential: Extremely high. Creating a music blog has one of the highest-earning potentials on this list, with all the different types of monetizing strategies available.

Time Until Your First Check:  Medium. Between 3 and 8 months to start, but once you have some traffic, the income can become very passive and grow pretty quickly.

Startup Cost: Very low. Around $120 to get hosting, photos for blog posts, and a good logo.

If you’re interested in learning how to start a good music blog and start attracting an audience to your site, I recommend a great blogging course called Project 24 by Income School. They provide a step-by-step guide to creating a blog from scratch and have a great community for all students!

5. Selling your merch

Another great way to make money online as a singer is to sell your own merchandise with your online store.

To start selling your own merch, you’ll need two things:

  1. Good designs
  2. An online store

You can either start by designing your merch yourself or hire the services of talented artists online. One of the best websites where you can find great artists and designs for a fair price is on Fiverr.

With Fiverr, you’ll be able to quickly choose the best freelance artist that fits within your needs and budget. There are tons of artists to choose from, and they all post their portfolio so that you can look at their work and decide if they’re style works with your brand.

A lot of artists allow for revisions if you need them and also deliver your work quite quickly.

Once you have your designs, you’ll need to create a website where you can put your items up for sale. An easy website builder to sell your merch is Bandzoogle. Bandzoogle is a toolkit that helps you quickly build, manage, and promote your music website. They also provide you a store section to sell your merch to your fans.

15-smart-ways-for-singers-to-make-money-online-bandzoogle

What’s great about Bandzoogle is that all sales are commission free! You can start selling your music and merch without worrying about giving a chunk out of your revenue.

Creating your own t-shirts or mugs is also very easy. You can add your design on the shirt and accessories just by dragging and dropping your designs.

They also have integration with popular social media platforms, making it easier for your fans to reach your website. Just share your website link on your socials to attract more visitors to your store.

How to Get Started: Make a design and setup Bandzoogle to sell your merch.

Earning Potential: Moderate. Most likely, your fans will be the only ones buying your merch. So earnings depend on how many supports you got.

Time Until Your First Check: Medium. If you have loyal fans who consume your content, you can start making money fast.

Startup Cost: Low. Finding a good artist on Fiverr can be inexpensive. Bandzoogle is around $9-18 a month, depending on their promotions.

6. Promote products using an email list

According to the 2019 “Adobe Email Usage Study,” Americans check their work email (three-plus hours a day) and personal email (two-plus hours a day), which comes out to around five hours per day checking emails.

This study shows that email marketing is an effective and lucrative way to market your music and services to your fans.

How do you set up email marketing for singers?

You first need to have a website where your fans can put in their email address to get your exclusive content and insights. If you’re using Bandzoogle to make your music website, you’ll already have the email capture feature.

As you’re collecting more emails on your website, you can write a series of automated emails that engage with your audience. You can use tools like Mailchimp to send them out automatically.

You can include content like exclusive welcome videos, songwriting experiences, and even your personal stories in your music journey.

The main goal with the initial emails is to create a relationship with your audience and bringing them from being a casual listener into a loyal fan that will support your music and your promotions.

Once you’ve built up a rapport with your fans, you can send your fans different promotions that you have.

Maybe you want to promote your single that’s coming out on a music streaming service. Or you have your artist’s merch that you want to sell.

Regardless of what you want to promote, building an email list will help you create a relationship with your fans. When you leverage the power of email, you can start making consistent money every month without “hard selling” your loyal followers. You’ll develop a relationship so that your supporters will want to purchase your music and invest in your music journey.

How to Get Started: Create a website, share your website link on your socials, and start collecting emails!

Earning Potential: Moderately High. You can make a lot of money by promoting an engaged email list.

Time Until Your First Check: Medium. It could take around 2-6 months, collecting enough emails to make some money.

Startup Cost: Low. All you need is a website builder and Mailchimp to send automated emails.

7. Sell your singing service on freelance websites

There are many freelance websites where you can provide your vocals as a service for music companies, producers, and musicians. Common projects that can use your vocals include commercials/advertisements, singing jingles, and recording tracks.

These gigs are a great way to supplement your income on the side and build up your vocal portfolio.

Although the competition can be quite high since the barrier of entry is quite low, you definitely shouldn’t brush off this opportunity quickly because high competition means high demand!

There are so many new commercials and music tracks being produced out there that make advertising your vocal services on freelancing websites a great option to make money online as a singer.

There are a lot of different platforms where you can offer your vocal services. Some platforms focus on recording tracks for music producers, while others generally hire all kinds of vocal services.

Here are some of the best freelance websites for singers:

  1. Fiverr – High amount of jobs.
  2. Soundbetter – The most popular website for remote freelance work.
  3. Vocalizr – Connects you to producers looking to hire vocalists for their tracks.
  4. Airgig – Quick approval process to join and high-quality jobs

All these websites are great if you’re looking for vocal freelance jobs. The way to succeed as a freelance vocalist is by providing quality work, providing excellent customer service and ultimately, building a great reputation. If you do this, you’ll stand out from all the other freelancers in this space.

If you’re recording from home, you’ll need to be able to record studio-quality vocals. To improve the quality of your recordings, check out this portable sound isolation vocal booth like Monoprice (Amazon) to enhance the acoustics of your room as well as a good microphone like ATX 2035 (Amazon) for clearer vocals.

How to Get Started: I’d start by setting up a simple DIY home studio first. Record some demos that you can showcase. Then apply for all the freelance websites.

Earning Potential: Moderately High. You can make a lot when you’re more established. But first, you’ll need to build up your reviews and rating.

Time Until Your First Check: Medium. You can earn very quickly if your portfolio is strong enough.

Startup Cost: Moderate. You can have a simple setup for your recordings. If you’re tight on budget, you can look for second-hand recording equipment to lower the initial cost.

8. Teach singing online

Teaching others how to sing online is a great way to make some extra cash for yourself. If you’re passionate about teaching and are a bit tech-savvy, teaching online can be quite profitable.

Good vocal coaches can demand quite a lot, especially if they have built up a solid reputation and market themselves well.

I’ve personally paid vocal coaches nearly $80 per hour to build up my vocal techniques and stamina. It can be quite a lot of money, but I feel like spending on improving my vocals is worth the investment.

I’m sure many singers in the world feel the same.

If you’re just starting, don’t worry too much about your hourly price at first. Work on improving your teaching techniques and do a good job so that your student can give you a positive review.

When you start having a few happy customers writing good reviews for you, you’ll instantly get the credibility to up your hourly rate.

You can use either Zoom or Skype to host your online classes. Just make sure you have a working microphone, headset, and, most importantly, access to reliable internet.

If you’re not sure about your singing techniques, you can first learn from some of the very best before venturing out as a teacher. I recommend the 30 Day Singer online program to build up your singing fundamentals before coaching other singers. They have a FREE TRIAL for a month if you sign up. You can also learn a few tips and tricks from them as well!

How to Get Started: You can start by building an audience using any social media platform and market to your followers who are interested in learning how to sing. Start with a lower price and slowly add to it as you gain more students.

Earning Potential: Moderate. If you grow a whole business around your effort, you could undoubtedly earn a full-time wage, but you’re more likely to bring in between $300 to $3,000 per month.

Time Until Your First Check: Moderate. If you advertise singing lessons on your social media pages, it could be quick. If you’re marketing through word of mouth or referrals, it could take longer.

Startup Cost: Low. You can start right away if you already have an internet connection, an instrument (piano/guitar), and a computer.

9. Create an online singing course

If you’re looking for a more passive way to teach singing, you can consider making a singing program and selling it online.

Online singing courses are becoming great substitutions for traditional methods of learning how to sing because of its convenience and flexibility.

Singing courses like the Singorama and 30 Day Singer are killing it online.

To create an online course, you can use platforms like Udemy or Skillshare to upload video tutorials. Once they’re uploaded, you can market your course through different avenues like your email list, website, and youtube channel.

The best part about making an online course is that all the work is done upfront.

Traditionally, singing teachers get paid by the amount of time they spend with their students, which can be quite worrisome if the hours are low. But with an online course, you’ll only need to teach and create your video lessons once at the beginning. Then just focus on packaging and selling your course.

To help your students, you can also include bonuses like Facebook/email support, downloadable pdf sheets, and workbooks. Adding a few extra bonuses will increase the value of your course, which will help entice more students to try out your course.

How to Get Started: I recommend starting a Youtube channel first to gain more experience in front of the camera and build a following before trying to market your course.

Earning Potential: Extremely high. It may take a long time to build up an audience, but this type of business can quickly bring in a lot of money IF you are successful!

Time Until Your First Check: This is a long-term investment in time and effort to build up an audience, create good content, and sell video courses. Expect it to take at least eight months before you make a significant income.

Startup Cost: Low. It doesn’t cost much to do something like this. You can start creating videos within a couple of hundred bucks (camera, tripod, and lighting)

10. Provide vocal and music production services

Do you have experience working on different DAWs like Apple Logic Pro or Pro Tools? Do you know how to make vocals sound better by adjusting the EQ, adding effects, and tuning the vocals? If you do, vocal engineering and music production can be an excellent way for you to make money online.

Many singers don’t know how to fine-tune their voice to make their tracks sound professional. Knowing how to adjust and create a vocal-focused mix is a valuable skillset that you can monetize.

Being able to produce music can be very helpful as well. Reputable music producers can charge a lot of money to produce one track for an artist.

The best way to sell your services is through freelance websites like Fiverr, Soundbetter, and Airgig.

Similar to online vocal recording services, mixing vocals and producing tracks for other artists can be very competitive. But if you have a particular sound that other artists like, it will help you stand out from the crowd.

You can also market your services on your social media pages and your website.

How to Get Started: Learn how to mix and produce your own tracks first. Create a good portfolio of songs and showcase them on freelance websites.

Earning Potential: Moderately high. Depending on how many clients you attract, you can be making quite a decent amount per track.

Time Until Your First Check: Medium. It depends on how fast you get selected to work on a project.

Startup Cost: Moderate to high. You’ll need a DAW and a midi keyboard for a basic setup. There may be additional plugins and effects that you may want to invest in as you work on more sophisticated tracks.

11. Start a podcast for singers

Podcasts are a fantastic way to gain an audience and attract sponsorships from brands, which can be very lucrative. As a singer, you can talk about your insights and experiences to become an expert in your space.

You can also talk about different singing techniques, teach music marketing, current events, and so much more.

Try to pick a topic that you’re knowledgeable about and can speak about for 100+ episodes. With podcasts, you’re playing the long game. But the rewards will pay off when your podcast starts to get popular.

There are a few different ways you can earn money through your podcast.

1. Feature brands and charge them to be in your episodes, so they get exposure to your audience. Most of the time, for this, you’ll need to create a 20 to 30-second voice ad promoting the brand.

Make sure the brand is trustworthy as you don’t want to lose followers for unreliable brands. Stick to brands and products you like and believe in.

2. Earn commissions by enticing listeners to check out different products and services by clicking to your link to access the product.

3. Use your podcast to promote your own products and services.

When you start a podcast, you’re positioning yourself as an authority as a singer. This will create the trust and connection that will help you attract large audiences and prominent brands, which will lead to more significant monetization opportunities.

How to Get Started: I’d highly recommend checking out Podcast Advance to start.

Earning Potential: Moderately High. You can make good money through big sponsorships. But advertising your products will be the biggest money-making method.

Time Until Your First Check: Long. It will take quite a long time to begin a podcast, publish it, promote it, and get sponsors. Plan on at least six months to a year.

Startup Cost: Low. Your main cost will be podcasting gear, a logo, and a website. A $200 investment in your podcast is a very reasonable budget, but you could do it for as cheap as $60.

12. Create and sell vocal sample packs

New vocal samples are always hot in demand as they can be great inspirations for producers to use for new beats or finishing touches on a new track.

The work for creating vocal sample packs is all done up front, and it can be a steady source of passive income. Vocal sample packs can include everything from echo-sounding la’s, weird vocal yells to syncopated woo’s.

Here’s a cool demo about vocal sample packs:

To create vocal sample packs that you can sell, you need to be familiar with some of the production standards and guidelines:

  1. All the sounds you create for sale should be 100% original and not retooled from any licensed source.
  2. Loop duration should generally be two bars. Although, four-bar loops are acceptable, but only if warranted.
  3. The file naming scheme and format for your samples should fit with wherever you’re uploading the packs.

A great platform that you can use to upload your vocal sample packs to is Sonoiz. Sonoiz helps you distribute your vocal sample pack and sell your sample packs to music producers and sound designers.

Another way of selling your vocal sample pack is by setting up a Shopify store and promoting the website using your own socials.

You can market your sample packs by creating “behind the scene” videos while you’re recording your vocals. It’s a great way to show your audience an inside glimpse of your recording process and pique their interest in your work.

How to Get Started: Start recording various vocal tracks. Decide whether you want to use Sonoiz to distribute for you or you sell your vocal sample packs yourself through Shopify.

Earning Potential: Moderately high. If you have an engaged audience, you can sell quite a lot of sample packs.

Time Until Your First Check: Moderate. Once you get your sample pack ready, you could probably start earning in a month or so, depending on your audience size.

Startup Cost: Moderate to high. You’ll need a DAW and an excellent microphone to start. You may want to invest in some vocal effects to make your sample pack unique.

13. Write songs for others

Many people are looking for songwriters to write melodies and lyrics for them. The songs could be for professional projects like promotion songs or jingles for brands. You can also write songs for special occasions like weddings and anniversaries.

Regardless of what the song is for, if you’re able to write songs that fit with the client’s vision, songwriting can be a good source of income.

One thing you must figure out before taking on the project is if the job is a one-off paid gig or if there are royalties involved. Be sure to make it clear from the start.

If you’re posting your job on Fiverr, most of the tasks will only be paid upfront without any royalties involved unless your song makes it into film or television.

How to Get Started: Search on Fiverr and see what your competitors are doing. Look at what you can do better, whether it’s the photos, intro video or description about the gig.

If you want to learn how to write a song from start to finish, I’ve written a step-by-step guide that you can check out here

Earning Potential: Moderately high. If you have an engaged audience, you can sell quite a lot of sample packs.

Time Until Your First Check: Moderate. You’ll need to build up your songwriting portfolio before getting customers reaching out to you.

Startup Cost: Low. If you already have an instrument and a laptop, you’ll start right away.

14. Live stream performances

Performing live on camera is a great way to grow your brand as well as engage with your fans. There is something inspiring about watching a live, unedited, and unpredictable live stream. Over time, you can create an audience that is trusting of your brand, loves your music and your values, which is important with monetizing.

Popular platforms like Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitch all provide live streaming in their app.

There are a few ways where you can make money in your live stream performances.

Fan donations

When fans are enjoying your performance and having a good time, many of them will give tips and support your music.

When you’re live streaming, you have an excellent opportunity to let your fans know you at a personal level. If you’re creating a setlist for your live stream, use 30% of the set for Q&A sessions so that you’re spending time interacting with your fans.

To monetize, you can include a Paypal link in your stream. Some platforms like Twitch already have a donation function built-in to their app.

Brand deals and sponsorships

Affiliate programs are an excellent way to monetize your live streams. You can work with a sponsor and promote their service or a product.

Here’s how affiliate programs can work with your live streams: You mention your sponsor in your stream and promote their company. They provide you a unique product link (or promo code) for their services or product. And every time someone visits the link and buys the product – you get a percentage of the sale.

Whenever you’re working with a brand, make sure that the company is trustworthy. No brand is worth losing your entire following over. In the long run, your reputation is much more important.

How to Get Started: Pick your platform of choice and start playing your music! Promote your live stream every time on all your socials to let your audience know.

Earning Potential: Moderately high. If you have a broad audience, brands will come to find you. If you have superfans on your stream, there’s a lot of potential to get donations.

Time Until Your First Check: Long. You’ll have to be consistent with building your following.

Startup Cost: Low. Just grab your smartphone or computer, and start playing away!

15. Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is a great way to fund your projects without needing to look for huge advances from either a record label or a loan.

Instead, you’re receiving a small amount of support from a large audience by tapping into your loyal followers.

The best part is: your fans WANT to support you. But all you need to do is ask. Crowdfunding lets you do it in a manageable way.

Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo are both established crowdfunding companies that can help you fund the projects that you want.

For both platforms, you must set a goal for funding and set a timeline.

The main difference between Kickstarter and Indiegogo is how much money you receive after your deadline.

With Kickstarter, if you don’t meet your goal in time, all donations made by your fanbase will be refunded. However, with Indiegogo, they have “flex funding,” which gives you the option to collect your donations (with a 9% fee) even if you don’t meet the goal.

If you’re confident that you’ll be able to hit your goal within the deadline, go with Kickstarter. It will pay off in a big way.

But if you’re not sure that you’ll reach your goal, go with Indiegogo and see how much you can fund for your campaign.

How to Get Started: Make a business plan and make sure you know your budget. Think about the different offerings that you’ll provide for each level of rewards while creating all the necessary promotional content like videos and descriptions. Once you have everything set: mass promote your campaign.

Earning Potential: Very high. If you can create a successful campaign, you can make a lot from crowdfunding.

Time Until Your First Check: Moderate to Long. Your check depends on how long you set your funding. Typically campaigns run from 30-90 days.

Startup Cost: Low. In the beginning, spending a lot of time creating promotional content and planning will be the most significant initial investment.

Final Thoughts

Now that you have all the different ways of making money online as a singer. Take massive action! The most important part is starting and immersing yourself in your projects!

By taking immediate and bold action, you’ll see results quickly, which will help you gain momentum and motivation to keep going.

Good luck!
